Durban comes alive during the Comrades Marathon, and whether you’re running, supporting, or just here for a good time, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. When is the Comrades Marathon 2025?

The Comrades Marathon 2025 takes place on 8 June 2025, following its famous down run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, lasting 12 hours. If you’re wondering why thousands of runners voluntarily punish themselves over 89km, well, it’s tradition.

Things to Do in Durban Over Comrades Marathon Weekend

1. Cheer on the Runners (Without Running Yourself)

Not everyone is built for 89km of pure suffering. If you’d rather spectate, join the crowds along the route or at the finish line at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Bring a camp chair, snacks, and your loudest voice—support is everything!

2. Explore Durban’s Beaches

Durban’s beaches, some of the best beaches in South Africa, are warm all year round, and nothing beats a sunrise walk along the Golden Mile. If you’re feeling fancy, grab a coffee and watch the runners cross the finish line from the Suncoast Casino deck.

3. Take a Rickshaw Ride

Yes, it’s touristy. Yes, it’s cheesy. But when else will you get the chance to ride a brightly decorated rickshaw along the Durban beachfront? The rickshaw pullers have stories to tell, and it’s a fun way to soak in the sights.

5. Hit Up a Shisanyama Spot

If watching all that running makes you hungry, Durban’s got you covered. Head to Max’s Lifestyle in Umlazi or Eyadini Lounge for a proper South African braai experience. Meat, music, and vibes—what more do you need?

 6. Get the Best Bunny Chow in Town

Durban is famous for bunny chow—a hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with spicy curry  and other South African delicacies.

  • The KZNSA Gallery – Local art, coffee, and a great spot to chill.
  • The Point Waterfront Canals – Think mini-Venice, but with kayaks and fewer gondolas.

  • Shongweni Farmers Market – Every Saturday, just outside Durban. Think organic produce, crafts, and live music.
