A family city trip may seem slightly daunting at first glance. Parents often picture little feet that grow weary, pricey coffee shops, busy museums, and frequent purchases of various snacks in order to maintain an atmosphere of joy. However, a brief family city vacation can become the easiest travel experience, particularly when opting for a location that offers convenient transportation, nearby parks, and numerous opportunities to enjoy oneself without spending any money.
In planning such a trip, I often prefer to follow the natural tempo of my family rather than famous landmarks. There are many beautiful places depicted in pictures, yet they are difficult to explore with kids when distances are long. Moreover, it would be useful to look at some practical tips on best holiday destinations and ask some easy questions such as: Will we be able to walk around? Is it possible to eat affordable food? Can we reach the hotel easily? Are there enough spaces for our children to play?
Choose a city that is pedestrian-friendly
If you plan a family city getaway, the pedestrian aspect is important rather than the abundance of sights. It’s too tiring and costly when each and every activity implies a taxi ride or even some difficult train transportation. Thus, a family-friendly city should offer a central spot where one can easily go for a stroll from one place to another – from breakfast, through the park, to the museum, and finally to accommodation without having the feeling of traveling halfway across the country.
Checking the map in advance is vital to me. Although an inexpensive hotel will save some money, it may prove to be expensive due to a remote location. It’s always better to spend a little bit more on accommodation that is situated in the center, which saves time and energy on each trip throughout the city.
Moreover, it is preferable to be near the normal residential place rather than being directly situated on the tourist trail. The existence of bakeries, grocery stores, parks, and coffee shops will facilitate your vacation to the highest degree. It will become easier for you to know the real face of the city, and the costs may also be lower.
Plan the day based on free activities
Not always do children require any specific attraction to get interested in a particular city. A fountain, a tram ride, a bridge, a playground, or a spacious square may turn out to be the best option for the whole day. It means great news for our budget since almost all the cities offer many inexpensive or free-of-charge locations outside the tourist one.
Before going anywhere, I like to mark some places on the map.

This allows for a certain structure but without forcing us to follow a rigid schedule. In case the kids are lively, we will visit the park. Should it rain, we might decide to visit an exhibition or a local market. In case we are all tired, we may stroll, purchase some fruits and relax.
Such vacations are usually quite relaxing. One does not necessarily have to visit all tourist spots. It is enough to experience the city, eat good food, take a couple of pictures and return home without getting utterly tired.
Keep the food budget simple
Food is likely to be one of the most expensive things for the city break trip. The restaurants located around famous tourist locations are unlikely to offer decent deals. Children might choose an expensive meal, eat a couple of bites, and then demand snacks after an hour.
In my opinion, it is desirable that there is accommodation where people can cook breakfast themselves. In addition, the availability of the kettle, fridge, and even the table is quite an asset. Eating such products as yogurt, fruit, cheese, cereal, bread, and juice bought from the shop becomes cheaper. Moreover, no one will have to dress up in order to have something to eat.
At noon, markets and bakeries can be visited too. At times, a picnic in the park appears far more pleasant than lunch in the restaurant with tired kids around. Finally, having just one real dinner per day seems like a great option if the whole day was dedicated to shopping.
Having a snack pack during the travel can reduce expenses as well. Some water bottles, apples, crackers, and snacks may prevent paying high prices for food because of hunger.
Choose one paid highlight
When visiting a city, especially for just two or three days, it might be hard not to include any paid activities. However, too many of them will make your visit hectic. You have to concentrate on one attraction, while the rest remains simple.
This paid highlight can include a visit to a science museum, a cruise, a show for children, a visit to the zoo, or simply the chance to climb up a tower and have a stunning view. One paid attraction allows one to enjoy it more since you have time not to miss anything and do everything within a set period. In addition, kids will be able to recall one event better because there will be less number of events at all.
Before organizing a visit, remember to check whether they have any family tickets, days when entrance is for free, and whether the entrance to the zoo is paid for toddlers and babies.
Keep space for mundane activities
Your city getaway for a family doesn’t have to be awe-inspiring every moment.Sometimes, some of the most rewarding moments are the most common ones, such as riding the city bus for a while, visiting local bakeries, bird-watching in the city square, or even allowing children to choose postcards.
This is one reason why I always like to add some time to the plan. The relaxed mornings and spontaneous walks will make the trip more of a vacation than a chore. Children will definitely be interested in cities only if you don’t hurry through them.
Here is the key – picking a destination that will suit your family’s pace, financial capacity, and preferences. Given enough walking distance, simple food, free attractions, and one unique experience, your city adventure will be meaningful without being costly.
