Dubai, the land of glittering skyscrapers, airport shopping malls the size of small cities and a stopover hotspot for South Africans flying just about anywhere. But here’s the question that South Africans transiting through always ask: Do I need a visa to transit through Dubai? Let’s break down everything you need to know about the Dubai Transit Visa.

Do South Africans need a transit visa for Dubai?

Short answer: Not always.

  • Layover under 8 hours, staying in the airport: No visa required.
  • Layover longer than 8 hours, but you remain in the transit area: Still no visa required.
  • Planning to leave the airport for sightseeing, shopping or a hotel stay: Yes, you’ll need to apply for a Dubai Transit Visa before you travel.

Pro tip: Emirates and FlyDubai can help arrange your transit visa when you book with them. Always confirm with your airline before you fly.

How long is a Dubai transit visa valid for?

Dubai has two transit visa options for South Africans:

  • 48 hour Transit Visa – Free of charge, perfect for a quick stopover.
  • 96 hour Transit Visa – AED 50 (±R240), ideal if you want a few days to explore.

Both must be arranged before departure. You can’t just “buy one at the counter.”

What are the South African transit visa requirements for Dubai?

Here’s the quick-and-dry list of what you’ll need:

  • A valid South African passport (at least 6 months before expiry).
  • a photo of self against a white background
  • A confirmed onward ticket (you must prove you’re actually in transit).
  • A hotel booking if you’re planning to step out of the airport.
  • Visa application through your airline (Emirates or FlyDubai are your best bets).

Do I need a visa if I’m only connecting flights in Dubai?

  • If you’re flying straight through and your connection is short, you won’t need a transit visa.
  • If your connection is long and you’re tempted to ditch the terminal for some shawarma, you’ll need one.

Basically: Airport couch = no visa. Dubai adventure = visa required.

How do I apply for a transit visa?

  • Via your airline: Emirates and FlyDubai can process applications online.
  • Processing time: Usually 3–5 working days, so don’t leave it to the last minute.

What is needed for a transit visa application?

  • a passport or travel document with a minimum validity of three months
  • an onward ticket booking to a 3rd destination, other than the one you are coming from.
