Kati and I recently traveled back to Pennsylvania to celebrate my mother’s 91st birthday. We decided to stay in my college town of State College, PA.  The weather was fantastic, and the farms were filled with delicious corn, beans and other produce and the college kids were coming back to campus. There was definity a buzz in the air as we headed downtown.

I graduated from Penn State University in 1983, and it has been almost 30 years since I have been back on campus and in town. State College was different since I had been there last, but no less impressive.

Nestled in the heart of central Pennsylvania, State College is a vibrant cultural hub that offers a perfect weekend escape for those seeking a blend of history, arts, culinary delights, outdoor adventures, shopping, and entertainment. Known primarily for being home to Pennsylvania State University, State College has much more to offer than just a college town atmosphere. With its rich history, thriving arts and music scene, culinary delights, outdoor adventures, shopping and entertainment options, as well as a calendar full of festivals and events, State College truly has something for everyone.

Exploring the Rich History of State College

To truly understand the essence of State College, one must delve into its rich history. Originally known as “The Big Spring,” the area was settled in the late 18th century and officially became State College in 1896. The town owes its existence to the establishment of Pennsylvania State College, which later became Pennsylvania State University. Today, visitors can explore the university’s beautiful campus, which is home to iconic landmarks such as Old Main, the Nittany Lion Shrine, and the Palmer Museum of Art. The Centre County Historical Society also offers a glimpse into the region’s past through its exhibits and guided tours.

Unveiling State College’s Thriving Arts and Music Scene

State College boasts a thriving arts and music scene that rivals that of much larger cities. The Palmer Museum of Art, located on the Penn State campus, houses an impressive collection of American, European, and contemporary art. The museum regularly hosts exhibitions and events that showcase both established and emerging artists. For those interested in live performances, the Center for the Performing Arts at Penn State offers a diverse lineup of theater, dance, and music productions throughout the year. Additionally, State College is home to several art galleries and music venues that feature local talent and touring acts.

Indulge in Culinary Delights: State College’s Foodie Paradise

Food enthusiasts will find themselves in paradise when visiting State College. The town is teeming with a wide array of culinary options, ranging from casual eateries to upscale dining establishments. The downtown area is particularly known for its diverse selection of international cuisines, including Thai, Indian, Italian, and Mexican. For those seeking a taste of local flavors, State College is home to several farm-to-table restaurants that showcase the region’s agricultural bounty. Additionally, the town hosts an annual “Taste of the Town” event, where visitors can sample dishes from various local restaurants and food vendors.

No Penn State visit is complete without visiting the Nittany Lion shrine.

Outdoor Adventures: Embrace Nature in State College

Nature lovers will find plenty to explore in and around State College. The town is surrounded by picturesque landscapes, including the nearby Rothrock State Forest and Bald Eagle State Park. These natural areas offer opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing, and boating. For those seeking a more adrenaline-fueled adventure, State College is also a gateway to the breathtaking beauty of the Pennsylvania Wilds, where activities such as whitewater rafting, rock climbing, and zip-lining await. State College truly offers a perfect blend of urban amenities and outdoor recreation.

Shopping and Entertainment: State College’s Retail and Nightlife Scene

State College’s retail scene is as diverse as its cultural offerings. The downtown area is lined with a mix of independent boutiques, specialty shops, and national retailers. Visitors can browse through unique clothing stores, bookshops, art galleries, and more.

When the sun sets, State College comes alive with its vibrant nightlife scene. The town is home to numerous bars, pubs, and clubs that cater to a variety of tastes. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back atmosphere to enjoy a craft beer or a lively dance floor to let loose, State College has something for everyone. The town also hosts regular live music performances, comedy shows, and theater productions, ensuring that there is always something entertaining happening after dark.

Festivals and Events: Celebrate the Vibrancy of State College

State College is known for its lively calendar of festivals and events that celebrate the town’s vibrant culture. One of the most popular events is the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts, which takes place every July. This five-day extravaganza features juried art exhibitions, live performances, street vendors, and a sidewalk sale that transforms downtown State College into a bustling hub of creativity. Other notable events include the Central PA 4th Fest, one of the largest Independence Day celebrations in the country, and the State College Brew Expo, which showcases the region’s craft beer scene.

Planning Your Memorable Weekend Escape to State College, PA

When planning your weekend escape to State College, PA, there are several factors to consider. First, decide on the time of year you wish to visit, as the town’s calendar is packed with events and festivals throughout the year. Consider booking accommodations in advance, as State College can get busy during peak tourist seasons. Whether you choose to stay in a charming bed and breakfast, a modern hotel, or a cozy cabin in the nearby countryside, there are plenty of options to suit every budget and preference.

To make the most of your visit, create an itinerary that includes a mix of cultural experiences, outdoor adventures, culinary delights, and shopping and entertainment. Be sure to check the schedules of the Palmer Museum of Art, the Center for the Performing Arts, and other cultural venues to catch any exhibitions or performances that may interest you. Don’t forget to explore the town’s rich history by visiting landmarks such as Old Main and the Centre County Historical Society.

Again, be careful though.  We were there during the University’s move-in weekend and it was EXPENSIVE.  The typical room costs 3 times the normal amount.  Just be aware.

Our Final Word

State College, PA, offers a vibrant cultural hub for a memorable weekend escape. With its rich history, thriving arts and music scene, culinary delights, outdoor adventures, shopping and entertainment options, as well as a calendar full of festivals and events, State College truly has something for everyone. So pack your bags, plan your itinerary, and get ready to immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of State College, PA.
