15 Frequent Flier-loved Non-Amazon Travel Essentials

As someone who’s on a plane at least once a month (and in an airport security line far more often than I’d like to admit), I’ve learned that not all travel gear is created equal. Over the years, I’ve tested just about every trendy gadget, carry-on luggage, and “miracle” accessory Instagram has tried to sell me, only to realize that most travel essentials are the ones that make life easier and more comfortable on the road. They’re also designed to last the long-haul—not just survive one red-eye.

End-of-year sales are the perfect places to score major savings on my favorite travel essentials. These are the tried-and-true items I reach for every single time I travel—no matter where I’m headed or how little room I have in my carry-on. Most of these items are non-Amazon products, but a handful can be found at Amazon if you want faster shipping. From a white noise machine that’s saved my sanity in paper-thin hotel rooms to the packable midlayer that never leaves my bag, these items have officially earned a permanent spot in my packing rotation—and they start at just $10.

Lululemon Everywhere 1L Leather Belt Bag

I’ve stopped trying to pack trendy, expensive purses because they inevitably take up too much space in my bag. Instead, I stick to my ol’ reliable: my Lululemon Belt Bag, which packs down next to nothing when I’m not wearing it. The adjustable strap can be worn as a crossbody or as a belt, and the 1-liter capacity is a Goldilocks size for carrying all my essentials hands-free. Mine is black (because it goes with everything), but it comes in a rainbow of colors, so you’re sure to find one you love.  

Cadence Capsules

Once you start using Cadence Capsules, you’ll never go back to mini bottles or Ziploc bags for your skincare and supplements. These magnetic, leakproof containers snap together like a tiny honeycomb, so you can actually stay organized mid-trip. I use mine for serums, medication, jewelry—you name it. Best of all, it’s four inches around, so it fits just about anywhere.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

Between flights and time spent outdoors, my skin is always in need of some serious TLC—especially on my lips. Laneige has been my go-to for years. The beloved Lip Sleeping Mask is a treat for lips thanks to a burst of coconut oil, shea butter, and murumuru seed butter that deliver serious moisture overnight. It’s TSA-friendly, and the flavors are so delicious (there are more than a dozen).

Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 Headphones

I’ve lost too many earbuds to ever travel without over-ear headphones again. Merino wool socks are elite for travel, and Bombas’ version is my go-to for everything from red-eyes to road trips. They’re warm but never sweaty, cushioned in all the right spots, and somehow manage to smell fresh after multiple wears (don’t judge me). I like the half-calf length for added warmth and a bit of compression on long travel days.

Slip Silk Sleep Mask

Speaking of sleep, I never leave home without a sleep mask either. Especially when I’m camping or traveling internationally, a sleep mask is key for blocking out light (or just signaling to others you don’t want to be bothered). Slip’s plush mask feels luxurious every time you put it on, and since it’s 100 percent Mulberry silk, it’s great for your skin, too. 

Stio Trax Power Grid Half-zip Hoodie

If there’s one piece of clothing I recommend bringing with you anywhere in the world, it’s a midlayer. This hoodie from Stio has become my latest favorite—it’s lightweight and layer-friendly, but sneakily warm, and the thumbholes keep the sleeves in place. Since it’s stretchy and so featherlight, it’s easy to layer over and under other clothes. As a perpetually chilly gal, I keep mine shoved in the bottom of my backpack just in case.

I am the queen of losing sunglasses, and after losing way too many pairs, I now only travel with ones I won’t mind losing. Enter these affordable sunglasses from Nordstrom. They’re super cute, and I don’t want to lose them—but for $15 a pop, I won’t mind if they get a bit beat up in my backpack or if I accidentally leave them in a hotel room. 

Goodwipes Flushable Wipes 3-pack

Don’t underestimate the power of a simple bathroom wipe—especially after you’ve spent 10+ hours sitting in recycled airplane air. These are my secret weapon for staying somewhat fresh on long travel days. I swear by Goodwipes because they’re plant-based and infused with cocoa shea butter that doesn’t dry out your skin. You can use them on sensitive areas like your face and underarms without worry. They come in extra-large sizes, so even when you’re miles away from an actual shower, you can fake one.
