Best Travel Essentials Overall

As someone who’s on a plane at least once a month (and in an airport security line far more often than I’d like to admit), I’ve learned that not all travel gear is created equal. Over the years, I’ve tested just about every trendy gadget, carry-on luggage, and “miracle” accessory Instagram has tried to sell me, only to realize that most travel essentials are the ones that make life easier and more comfortable on the road. They’re also designed to last the long-haul—not just survive one red-eye.

End-of-year sales are the perfect places to score major savings on my favorite travel essentials. These are the tried-and-true items I reach for every single time I travel—no matter where I’m headed or how little room I have in my carry-on. Most of these items are non-Amazon products, but a handful can be found at Amazon if you want faster shipping. From a white noise machine that’s saved my sanity in paper-thin hotel rooms to the packable midlayer that never leaves my bag, these items have officially earned a permanent spot in my packing rotation—and they start at just $10.

Travel Essentials I Swear By

Lululemon Everywhere 1L Leather Belt Bag

lululemon

I’ve stopped trying to pack trendy, expensive purses because they inevitably take up too much space in my bag. Instead, I stick to my ol’ reliable: my Lululemon Belt Bag, which packs down next to nothing when I’m not wearing it. The adjustable strap can be worn as a crossbody or as a belt, and the 1-liter capacity is a Goldilocks size for carrying all my essentials hands-free. Mine is black (because it goes with everything), but it comes in a rainbow of colors, so you’re sure to find one you love.

Cadence Capsules

Cadence

Once you start using Cadence Capsules, you’ll never go back to mini bottles or Ziploc bags for your skincare and supplements. These magnetic, leakproof containers snap together like a tiny honeycomb, so you can actually stay organized mid-trip. I use mine for serums, medication, jewelry—you name it. Plus, they’re TSA-approved, easy to clean, infinitely refillable, and downright cute.

Away Compression Packing Cubes

Away

Packing cubes changed the way I travel, but these compression cubes from Away took things to another level. They zip down tight to squeeze out every last inch of air, meaning I can fit way more into my carry-on (and avoid baggage claim entirely). The mesh front keeps everything visible and breathable, so I can find what I need without exploding my whole suitcase in the hotel room.

Yeti 18-ounce Rambler Water Bottle

Yeti

I test a lot of water bottles for my job, but nothing has convinced me to replace my Yeti Rambler. It’s stainless steel, meaning it doesn’t mold or get any weird smells when I inevitably forget to wash it (oops). Its hardy construction keeps water ice-cold all day, it fits perfectly in my backpack’s side pocket, and the leakproof lid means no mid-flight spills. Bonus points for the straw cap, which means I can sip hands-free on the go.

Quince Leather Travel Jewelry Case

Quince

I used to throw my jewelry into a toiletry bag and just hope for the best—until I opened it one day to find a tangled web of necklaces. This compact jewelry case from Quince has completely changed my travel routine. It’s made from buttery Italian leather and has dedicated spots for rings, earrings, and delicate chains. It’s small enough to fit in your carry-on but structured enough to keep everything protected—even when you’re sprinting through TSA.

Calpak Terra Zippered Passport Wallet

Calpak

I nearly lost my passport last spring coming home from the British Virgin Islands, and ever since then, I keep my documents neatly tucked away in this passport holder from Oleada. It’s luxe, and there are definitely more affordable, high-quality options available, like Calpak’s Terra Zippered Passport Wallet. It’s made with RFID-blocking technology to keep your digital information secure, while the zippered sides act as another level of physical security.

Teva ReEmber Terrain Slip-ons

REI

Being a frequent flier, I’ve tested a ton of shoes while going through TSA, and nothing comes close to the convenience or comfort of my Teva ReEmber Slip-ons. They’re technically a camping shoe designed to be worn as outdoor slippers, so they feel like mini puffer jackets for your feet. Aside from comfort, they’re smart for travel: the slip-on design keeps them convenient through security, the water-resistant uppers stand up to spills and splashes, and the grippy outsole keeps you from slipping when you’re running to your gate. Best of all, they pack flat—a miracle for frequent fliers.

Dreamegg Portable White Noise Machine

Walmart

After too many mornings waking up to a dead phone because I played white noise through an app all night, I finally gave in to buying this portable white noise machine—and I won’t shut up about it. I have brought it everywhere—from cross-country road trips to international vacations and even camping trips. It doesn’t leave my backpack when I’m traveling. The battery lasts incredibly long (almost a week on a single charge), and it has 21 soothing sounds that are easy to toggle through, even in a snoozy stupor. Best of all, it’s four inches around, so it fits just about anywhere.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask

Courtesy of Sephora

Between flights and time spent outdoors, my skin is always in need of some serious TLC—especially on my lips. Laneige has been my go-to for years. The beloved Lip Sleeping Mask is a treat for lips thanks to a burst of coconut oil, shea butter, and murumuru seed butter that deliver serious moisture overnight. It’s TSA-friendly, and the flavors are so delicious (there are more than a dozen).

Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 Headphones

Walmart

I’ve lost too many earbuds to ever travel without over-ear headphones again. Skullcandy’s Crusher ANC 2 Headphones are lightweight, have a crazy-long battery life (up to 60 hours), and connect seamlessly to multiple devices. The noise cancellation is elite, but the best part is arguably the Tile tracker integration, so when I accidentally leave them in the seat pocket, I’ll actually be able to find them again.

Bombas Merino Wool-blend Half-calf Socks

Bombas

Merino wool socks are elite for travel, and Bombas’ version is my go-to for everything from red-eyes to road trips. They’re warm but never sweaty, cushioned in all the right spots, and somehow manage to smell fresh after multiple wears (don’t judge me). I like the half-calf length for added warmth and a bit of compression on long travel days.

Slip Silk Sleep Mask

Nordstrom

Speaking of sleep, I never leave home without a sleep mask either. Especially when I’m camping or traveling internationally, a sleep mask is key for blocking out light (or just signaling to others you don’t want to be bothered). Slip’s plush mask feels luxurious every time you put it on, and since it’s 100 percent Mulberry silk, it’s great for your skin, too.

Stio Trax Power Grid Half-zip Hoodie

REI

If there’s one piece of clothing I recommend bringing with you anywhere in the world, it’s a midlayer. This hoodie from Stio has become my latest favorite—it’s lightweight and layer-friendly, but sneakily warm, and the thumbholes keep the sleeves in place. Since it’s stretchy and so featherlight, it’s easy to layer over and under other clothes. As a perpetually chilly gal, I keep mine shoved in the bottom of my backpack just in case.

BP. 50mm Oval Sunglasses

Nordstrom

I am the queen of losing sunglasses, and after losing way too many pairs, I now only travel with ones I won’t mind losing. Enter these affordable sunglasses from Nordstrom. They’re super cute, and I don’t want to lose them—but for $15 a pop, I won’t mind if they get a bit beat up in my backpack or if I accidentally leave them in a hotel room.

Goodwipes Flushable Wipes 3-pack

Walmart

Don’t underestimate the power of a simple bathroom wipe—especially after you’ve spent 10+ hours sitting in recycled airplane air. These are my secret weapon for staying somewhat fresh on long travel days. I swear by Goodwipes because they’re plant-based and infused with cocoa shea butter that doesn’t dry out your skin. You can use them on sensitive areas like your face and underarms without worry. They come in extra-large sizes, so even when you’re miles away from an actual shower, you can fake one.
