UA is challenging in the best of times, but today’s social media landscape can make marketers feel like they’re juggling eggs while walking over hot coals. The potential ban of a certain popular platform over national security concerns has raised uncertainty to stressful new levels. Algorithm and policy changes at another popular site raise safety concerns for other marketers. To sum it up, social media networks, both established and emerging, remain important UA tools, but it’s now critical to diversify beyond them.

Fortunately for UA marketers, the app economy is thriving, and in-app advertising presents a reliable, effective growth channel. With engaging, full-screen formats, less competition for attention, and robust performance tracking, in-app advertising should be a core part of any UA strategy.

The current state of user acquisition

There’s a reason so many UA marketers over-index on social media and search engine marketing: They reach large audiences. The most widely adopted platforms boast millions of users, offering robust targeting options and extensive reach. Search ads and SEO provide intent-based targeting, ensuring high-quality traffic. However, these channels are getting more competitive – and more expensive. And along with those rising CPCs, ever-changing algorithms and policies, and potential disruptions (or shutdowns!) mean that marketers can’t afford to rely on any single channel.

Taking a diversified approach to UA can provide a comforting degree of stability. Consider adding in-app advertising to your channel mix to balance things out. It can complement your existing programs by offering a new, engaging touchpoint with predictable costs, precise targeting, and high engagement rates.

Why in-app advertising should be part of your UA strategy

Engaging and immersive formats: A broad range of available formats, including playable ads, rewarded videos, and interstitials provide interactive, high-impact experiences that drive better user engagement. Playables, in particular, let users “test drive” an app before downloading, leading to higher retention and lower churn. In some cases, the ad creatives that perform well on social media can be reused with great success in-app.

Less competition for user attention: Unlike social media, where countless ads compete with each other and organic content, in-app environments offer comparatively few distractions. Users engaging with a mobile game or app are already focused, making them more receptive to ads – and likely, receptive to ads for apps and games in particular. This creates an important touchpoint, especially considering users spend a quarter of their day on mobile apps outside of social media.

Precision targeting and measurable ROI: In-app advertising offers advanced audience targeting, including behavioral and contextual targeting. (AppLovin’s platform offers the unique advantage of AI-powered user targeting.) Marketers can reach high-intent users with high-impact creatives, leading to better performance. Plus, robust, end-to-end measurement tools enable real-time optimization, ensuring efficient budget allocation and better campaign outcomes.

Scalability across verticals: In-app advertising isn’t just for gaming apps. Apps across every vertical, including finance, health, productivity, and entertainment, benefit from the ability to reach engaged users. With programmatic buying and AI-driven optimizations, campaigns scale efficiently across different categories.

Future-proofing your UA strategy: A multi-channel approach

A well-rounded UA strategy combines multiple acquisition channels for sustained growth. In-app advertising plays a crucial role by providing a scalable, high-engagement alternative that complements other acquisition efforts. Here’s how it fits into the mix:

  • In-app advertising: Engaging ad formats and precise targeting drive high-quality user acquisition and complement other channels.
  • Social media advertising: Social media platforms support brand awareness and engagement and may also drive direct conversions.
  • Search engine marketing (SEM): Target high-intent users through search, leveraging short-tail terms for brand awareness and long-tail terms for lower-funnel conversions.
  • Owned media and retention strategies: Use CRM, email marketing, and push notifications to re-engage acquired users while continuously optimizing UA efforts.

Looking ahead: A resilient UA strategy

As social platforms evolve and market dynamics shift, app marketers should stay open-minded and flexible. With a diversified channel strategy, UA pros can mitigate risks, maximize reach, and drive consistent growth—today and tomorrow—no matter what the industry throws at them.
