It’s also no secret that most of those fun Johannesburg attractions come with a price tag but worry not, we’ve compiled a list of 10 free things that you can do in Johannesburg this weekend. So put that bank card away and dive into a budget friendly Johannesburg adventure.

Not in Joburg? Book cheap flights to Johannesburg now!

  • Operating hours: 6 AM – 6 PM
  • How long is the hike at The WIlds: It’s only a 1,6 km hike, perfect for first timers and families with kids.
  • Can you picnic at The Wilds: 10000% yes!

Having a braai at the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is a very fun and free family activity to do in Johannesburg. Imagine boerewors on hot coals with a view of mountains and nature, simply epic!

  • Operating hours: 6 AM – 6 PM
  • Can you hike at Klipriviersberg: Yes you can! There are 12 trails (all beginner friendly) ranging from 5 km – 11 km

  • Pet friendly: Bummer! Pets aren’t allowed for now.

There’s nothing like a boerie roll with a view. The only thing better is saving R500 off your next domestic flight!

4. Zoo Lake

Zoo Lake in Johannesburg with ducks swimming and big green trees in the background under blue skies with scattered fluffy clouds.

Probably one of the most well known free Johannesburg attractions on this list, this is a picnic and braai spot with a lake view and ducks to match.

Things to do at Zoo Lake:

  • Picnic under the trees
  • Feed the ducks
  • Rent a row boat (not free, just FYI)
  • Bird watch/people watch

A crowd of people running through a city

If you are a fitness enthusiast, obsessed with getting your steps in for the day or just looking to get your feet hitting the ground then parkruns are for you!

  • Where can I find parkruns in Johannesburg: Head over to the parkrun website and find an event near you
  • How long is a parkrun: It’s just 5 km, not too much of a sweat!
  • Can I walk during a parkrun: If you prefer to walk instead of run, go for it. Completely fine!

Just walk a little further and you’re at Hector Pieterson memorial, a monument of the fight against apartheid.

  • Is Vilakazi Street safe: Yes, pretty safe but one can never be too careful anywhere so be alert.
