F1 in South Africa 2027, that’s the buzzing rumour going around. But truth be told, South Africa is long overdue for an Formula 1 comeback. Although, there is a debate heating up: should we host it in Joburg or Cape Town? Kyalami Race Track vs. Killarney Motor Racing Complex – let the battle begin.

Is F1 Coming to South Africa?

The short answer: not officially. Yet. But the whispers are getting louder and with F1 looking to expand into new markets, it’s not a pipe dream. South Africa last hosted an F1 Grand Prix in 1993 at Kyalami and ever since, local fans have been left waiting, watching and wondering: when is F1 coming to South Africa?

Now, let’s break it down – Joburg vs Cape Town.

Joburg: The OG of F1 in South Africa

Johannesburg is a world class city that is no stranger to hosting the F1 but the question stands: Will Johannesburg host the F1 again?

Pros:

Kyalami Race Track is F1-ready – With a proper racing pedigree, Kyalami has hosted F1 before. It knows the drill. The track was revamped in 2015 and meets FIA Grade 2 standards – just one upgrade away from F1 approval.

It’s motorsport central – Joburg has a massive motorsport fanbase, with Kyalami regularly hosting major events like the Intercontinental GT Challenge. It wouldn’t be a stretch to fill the stands.

High-altitude drama – At nearly 1,700m above sea level, engines (and drivers) would be pushed to their limits. Think Mexico City levels of chaos.

While you hope for F1 to come to Johannesburg, how about you go to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?

Cons:

Traffic. Loadshedding. Taxis. – If you think dodging Max Verstappen in a Red Bull is tough, wait until Charles Leclerc tries to navigate Winnie Mandela Drive in rush hour. Plus, SA taxis don’t do pit stops – they just stop. Anywhere (you can’t control the true kings of the road).

Our beautiful potholes – Kyalami might be F1 ready but the rest of Joburg is beautifully adorned with potholes that would give our international visitors an unexpected bumpy ride. But why should we hide our pores? They should embrace our city as it is, right?

Water and lights roulette – For some odd reason, no two parts of Johannesburg can have these two necessities at once. It is a very odd, once in a blue moon, occurrence for all of Joburg to have both water and electricity at the same time. But I think we can behave ourselves till the visitors leave, don’t you think?

Cape Town: The New Kid on the Grid

Enter the best city in the world 2025, Cape Town is the girl she thinks she is. The city version of Miss Universe!

Pros:

Scenic AF – Let’s be real, an F1 track with Table Mountain as a backdrop? Instant iconic status, any day of the week!

Tourism magnet – Cape Town is a global destination. An F1 Grand Prix here would skyrocket travel and revenue, turning the city into an even bigger tourist trap (in a good way).

Street race potential – Imagine an F1 street circuit winding through the city, past the Waterfront, Green Point, and back towards Killarney Motor Racing Complex. It would be chaos – but the good kind.

You would look good at the grand stands in Miami. Get an F1 Package now!

Cons:

Killarney needs a serious glow-up – The Killarney Motor Racing Complex is legendary, but it’s not F1-ready. Massive upgrades would be needed.

Wind. Wind. More wind. – Cape Town’s south-easterly wind is no joke. F1 cars are built for speed, not sudden gusts of 50km/h that send them into the Atlantic.

Logistical nightmare – Closing down a major chunk of the city for a street race would make Joburg’s traffic look like a minor inconvenience.

So, Who Wins?

Honestly, both cities have their strengths and weaknesses. Joburg has the history, the altitude challenge, and a track that’s almost race-ready. Cape Town has the aesthetics, tourism power, and street circuit potential.

But let’s be real – at this point, we’ll take F1 in SA anywhere. Just give us those roaring engines, tyre screeches, and podium champagne showers.

F1 in South Africa FAQs

When last did South Africa host an F1 race?

South Africa last hosted F1 in 1993 at Kyalami. Alain Prost took the win for Williams.

When is F1 coming to South Africa?

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie said the F1 is “definitely” coming to South Africa in 2027. However, there’s no confirmed date. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has also hinted that South Africa is on the radar. It’s just a matter of contracts, cash and commitment.

Who is the best F1 driver of all time?

This is a fight waiting to happen, but statistically, Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher are the GOATs with seven championships each. Max Verstappen is making a case for himself, though.

What are the top F1 records?

  • Most championships: Schumacher & Hamilton (7)
  • Most race wins: Hamilton (103 and counting)
  • Fastest lap in F1 history: Juan Pablo Montoya (Monza, 2004, at 372.6 km/h)
  • Youngest winner: Max Verstappen (18 years, 227 days)

Final Lap: Let’s Make This Happen

Joburg or Cape Town, Kyalami or Killarney, we don’t care. Just bring F1 to South Africa. Until then, we’ll be watching, waiting and dodging taxis like it’s our own version of a high-speed street circuit.
